Alicia Merrett Contemporary Art Quilts
I am a contemporary textile artist working with quilting techniques and brilliant colour. I will be showcasing three aspects of my work: first, my trademark map quilts; second, pieces inspired by Shakespeare's plays and sonnets, and third, and most importantly, I will be presenting my new abstract, colourful works, based on my original digital designs, digitally printed on fabric, and machine stitched.
I love paint and I love textiles and I combine the two in my work. I hand paint all the fabric I use and then print the finer details, and embellish with machine stitch. Each piece is individually designed, I create work that is flexible - able to change location as the mood takes you!

I am mad about all things woolly! I produce my own yarns from locally sourced fleeces from hobby farmers who keep small flocks as pets as the husbandry of the animals is important to me as is the organic methods of farming used and the fact that I know the owners personally as well as the sheep. Once I buy the fleeces I prepare them using organic products and spin them to make yarns which I also make various items from including winter warmers, interior decor items, bags and novelty gifts. Another passion of mine is dyeing and again I like to keep this organic and forage for dye materials in the countryside surrounding the farm where I live and also grow a number of plants in my dye garden. I use the natural dyes I make to produce the coloured yarns. I teach spinning and dyeing at workshops I hold at the farm and enjoy the interaction with the people that attend the workshops and being able to pass on these skills.

'All the quilts I'm bringing are based on original 1930s quilts. Working from photographs I draw the quilt blocks, resizing them so that I can make the blocks to work in a quilt. I then try to match the colours and fabrics of the original quilt as closely as possible, using reproduction fabrics. I do machine sew the quilt tops, but I hand quilt the finished quilt, using the original quilting designs if I can see them clearly, if not, doing my own thing!
Some of the quilts are samples for classes and workshops I teach, some have been drawn and written as patterns.'

Ros found a way to 'reinvent the wheel' - to create two sizes of wheels which can grip panels of paper and make a lampshade which fits comfortably and safely on the average lamp stand or room light.

Q1 & M3
Viv White Textiles
Inspiration comes from all around me with current themes including birds, maps and the Somerset levels. I rarely use new fabrics preferring to build on the traditions of women throughout history using stitching, patching and darning to give new life to fabrics. I enjoy sharing my excitement and enjoyment of textiles with others and teach art and stitch workshops for both children and adults.
When Civil war broke out in America in 1861 both Union and Confederate women supported the war effort by making quilts to provide their soldiers with warm bedding and also to raffle to raise money. The quilts were commonly made of scraps and old clothing with old feed sacks used for the backing. A variety of blocks were used which were often simple as the quilts were made in a hurry. They often incorporated patriotic symbols or words of encouragement. After the war ended more detailed commemorative quilts were produced.
This quilt was a group project sewn by members of Walton Textile Group and made from a kit that was donated. It is being raffled to raise money for the Hospice movement.
